Sunday afternoon, July 15, 2012, a marine passing through Union Springs called 911 and said he was following a REMCO van, and it was swerving all over the road. The marine followed the van from 82 East of Union Springs through Union Springs and out 82 West. The van drove about two miles into Montgomery, ran off the road, and flipped over in a ditch.
A single-vehicle accident occurred on Saturday, July 21, 2012, at about 4:30 in the afternoon. The vehicle was traveling East on Highway 81 near mile marker 181 in the Shopton area when the driver lost control.
Greenway Sportsman Club was the scene of a surprise birthday party for Cecilia Moorer, arranged by her husband, Joe. The guests brought presents for the Bullock County Humane Society, including dog food, dog bones, collars, leashes, dog toys, and washing machine detergent, to name a few.
A kitchen fire at 102 Bloomfield Apartments late Monday afternoon, July 23, heavily damaged the apartment, especially the kitchen. It appeared the fire started from food being cooked on the stove. The family was home when the fire was noticed. The fire department never had to pump water but did use a fan to draw the heavy smoke from the apartment.

The Class of 1966 of Elizabetha Merritt high School, Midway, Alabama, held their first class reunion on Monday, July 7, 1997, at Perry’s Park in Hardaway, Alabama, after 31 years of separation.
It could have been a tragedy, but fortunately, no one was injured when an automobile crashed into the Union Springs Pharmacy last Wednesday, July 9, at about 3:30 p.m. David Stewart, the drug store owner, said there were no customers inside the business when the vehicle entered through the front doors.
An escapee from the Bullock County Correctional Facility remains on the run, according to Warden Arnold Holt. LeBarren Hill escaped the prison sometime during the night of July 5 and later stole a vehicle in the city. The car was found abandoned near Newnan, Georgia, the next day. The car apparently had run out of gas while traveling I85.
Mrs. Marie Gaines and Joe Gaines announce the engagement of their daughter, Vici Dianne, to Rev. Stanley Gordon Pritchett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gordon Pritchett of Union Springs. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jim Gaines of Attalla, Mrs. Corene Connell, and the late Jack Connell. She is a graduate of Emma Sansom High School and is a junior at Troy State University.
Miss Eugenia Price Branscomb and Dr. David Kenneth Hobday of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, were married at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at the First United Methodist Church of Sheffield, Ala.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Brown of Midway and Mr. and Mrs. James Pride of Perote had guests recently from Cincinnati, Ohio. Mrs. Mary Hale, her sister, Maryland, Shelly, and Lisa Fuller, nieces, were shown quite an enjoyable time by the Browns and Prides. Mrs. Brown, former Alice Cox, and Mrs. Pride, former Lencie Cox are both citizens of Bullock County.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cope and Frank, Jr., Miss Ruby Finlayson, Mr. John Morgan and Jack Finlayson are leaving today for Miami, where they will board the S.S. Florida for a cruise to Cuba. Upon arriving, they will join other Alabamians and become a part of the “Alabama Goodwill Tour,” which is being presently sponsored.
June the fourteenth, Circle One of the Women’s Society of Christian Service met in the home of Mrs. H. W. Turner, Mrs. A. J. Moseley being co-hostess. Fifteen members were present. The meeting was opened with prayer.
On July 8th, the East Alabama Soil Conservation District Supervisors held their field meeting on the farm of the Chairman of the Board, E. P. Grant of Louisville Barbour County. Those attending from Bullock County were Hugh C. Moore from District Supervisor and District Cooperators T. P. Stroud and S. F. Adams.
Miss Lovie Kilgore returned Saturday from Camp Gulf Park, where she has been a camper for the past five weeks. She was a winner of a silver cup which was given for the most outstanding camper in the Riding Class, and also second place in the Horse Show.
The first open boll of cotton we have seen this season was brought in the first of the week by Miss Rosa Rasmussen from Hillhouse Farm, H. V. Rassmussen, proprietor. Mr. Rassmussen states that he has found some boll weevils in his cotton but does not think they have done much harm yet.
The casual August meeting of the County Board of Education will be held at its office in the Courthouse on Friday, August 4th, beginning at ten o’clock. This meeting is held annually for the purpose of considering transportation matters, and since it is highly desirable to have all available information regarding the needs and requirements of the various communities, school trustees and interested patrons are urged to attend.
The Sunbeams met at the church Sunday afternoon with their leader, Miss Lizzie Hall, and a splendid program was enjoyed. This little band will meet every Saturday afternoon at the Baptist church at 4 o’clock.
